The Dean’s Award for Outstanding Research Achievement is awarded annually and is based on scholarly achievements in the preceding three years.  The terms of reference include these criteria: the number, quality, impact, and stature of peer-reviewed journal publications; the number and quality of other research dissemination modes such as books, book chapters; peer-adjudicated research grants; peer-reviewed conference papers; and editorial board and major reviewer activities, significant service to the academic field, and mentorship appropriate to rank and years in academic life.

The winner of the inaugural award, Dr. Dev R. Mishra, professor in the Department of Finance and Management Science and scholar, Centre for Strategic Financial Management, is honoured for the quality and quantity of his contributions, the range and impact of his research, and his ongoing commitment to the teacher-scholar model.

During the review period, Dr. Mishra published ten peer-reviewed journal articles in leading journals in the field of finance, focusing primarily on international corporate finance. His empirical research has contributed to the disciplinary literature by examining the effect of firm, industry, and country attributes such as corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, ownership structure, analyst recommendations, and legal institutions on firms’ cost of equity, risk taking behaviour, and investment decisions related to mergers and acquisitions.

Winner of two prestigious research awards, including the 2011 Moskowitz Prize for Socially Responsible Investing, Dr. Mishra also received a SSHRC standard research grant while holding another SSHRC grant as co-investigator. In addition, he reviewed submissions for journals, conferences, grants, and promotion/tenure cases; served as supervisor or member on graduate student advisory committees; and presented 17 peer-reviewed conference papers—all while maintaining an impressive record of teaching and service.  The Edwards School of Business is proud to have such an exceptional winner of the inaugural Dean’s Award for Outstanding Research Achievement.
