Women of Influence

The 9th Annual Women of Influence Breakfast was held the morning of October 18, 2011 at TCU Place, Saskatoon with over 300 students and members of the business community eager to hear three women share their success stories. Dean Daphne Taras welcomed guests on behalf of the Edwards School before President of Airline Hotels & Resorts Co. Ltd. Betty Anne Latrace-Henderson, President & CEO of the Saskatoon Health Region Maura Davies and Founder, President & CEO of Fairway Divorce Solutions Karen Stewart each spoke on the rewards and challenges of becoming women leaders.

“Too many times we, as women, are intimidated because it’s a man’s world,” said Latrace-Henderson. “That’s not the case. I think we just have to find out who we are.” She said she learned her best lessons when going through her darkest times and is thankful for her strong family background. “I was very blessed to have a strong self-confidence and with that, I don’t need to prove things.”

Davies, who described her position with the Health Region as both exhausting and satisfying, encouraged guests to “do what you love. Chances are you’ll be good at it.” She said her proudest accomplishment has been raising a family. “I’ve been very successful in my career but I have two wonderful boys and I’ve been married for more than 40 years,” she said. “Being able to balance work and home has been something I’m most proud of.”

Stewart also spoke to achieving a work-life balance. “You can be a mom; you can be a successful business person; you can be a fabulous partner, daughter, sister, friend,” she said. “You can have everything, but it requires absolute laser-focus balance and laser-focus ruthlessness with time.” She added that attitude can either be a top barrier or key to success. “Embrace your vision and trust it but know that it’s going to be hard work,” she said. “If you put the time and effort in and you do things smart, it does pay off.”

The date for the 2012 event is yet to be determined, but it is guaranteed to be a celebration since it will be the 10th Annual Breakfast! Stay tuned for future details.
