Academic Performance Requirements

All students in the B.Comm. program must meet specific Yearly Requirements to continue studies in the Edwards School of Business. Before students register, they are expected to understand and respect the University's Academic Penalty Deadlines. Students must also meet specific Graduation Requirements in order to receive their B.Comm. degree. On a yearly basis, the Dean recognizes all students of high academic achievement by placing them on the Dean's Honour Roll. More information is available below.

Re-Admission Standards

All students in the B.Comm. program must earn a yearly average of at least 60% to be in good standing and continue their studies in the Edwards School of Business.

Students who do not obtain a yearly weighted average of at least 60% (on a minimum of 18 credit units attempted) in an academic year (May 1 - April 30) will be subject to a faculty action as outlined below:

FIRST YEAR STUDENTS

A first year student will be assigned a Requirement To Discontinue (RTD) faculty action and will lose credit for all courses in which a grade of 50-59% was earned in that year. The RTD action means that the student will not be allowed to continue in the Edwards School of Business for at least one academic year. Consult the Re-Admission Standards for information on how to apply back to Edwards after receiving an RTD faculty action as a first year student.

A first year student may attend Spring/Summer Session ONLY in an attempt to raise their average and clear their faculty action. The student must repeat or substitute (with permission) the course(s) in which a grade of less than 60% was earned and raise the weighted average to 62%. For purposes of the average calculation, the grade(s) obtained at Spring/Summer Session will be substituted for the original grade(s). If the 62% average is obtained, the faculty action will be removed and credit will be restored for the grades between 50-59% that were not repeated during Spring/Summer session. If the 62% average is not obtained, the faculty action stands. First year students will not be able to access second year Edwards classes until their faculty action has been cleared and removed from their transcript.

UPPER YEAR STUDENTS (2nd, 3rd and 4th)

An upper year student who has not had a previous faculty action and does not fail 50% or more of the courses attempted in an academic year will be assigned a Repeat Year (RY) faculty action and will lose credit for all courses in which a grade of 50-59% was earned in that year. The RY action means that the student can return to Edwards in the following year, but will be required to repeat the courses that they lost credit for (identified with an "N" on the transcript, indicating no credit).

An upper year student may attend Spring/Summer Session in an attempt to raise their average and clear their faculty action. Upper year students will then have to repeat courses between 50-59% in the next academic year.

If a student with a faculty action attempts to clear the action by repeating courses at Spring/Summer Session and is not successful in removing the action, the grades in those courses will be included in the subsequent academic year's average.

An upper year student who has had a previous faculty action in any college OR who fails 50% or more of the courses attempted in an academic year will be assigned a Requirement To Discontinue (RTD) faculty action and will lose credit for all courses in which a grade of 50-59% was earned in that year. The RTD action means that the student will not be allowed to continue in the Edwards School of Business for at least one academic year. These students do NOT have an opportunity to attend Spring/Summer session in an attempt to clear their faculty action. Consult the Re-Admission Standards for information on how to apply back to Edwards after receiving an RTD faculty action as an upper year student.

Students who have received two (2) Requirement to Discontinue (RTD) faculty actions from colleges at the University of Saskatchewan should refer to the University's RTD Policy.

PARTIAL WARNING (for students who are studying on a part-time basis)

A part-time student (who attempted less than 18 credit units in an academic year) will be assigned a Partial Warning if their yearly average falls below 60%. The Edwards School of Business believes that all students should have an adequate opportunity to prove their academic abilities. Therefore, no official faculty action is assigned, but a letter is sent to these students indicating that their average is below the minimum standard and that the grades will carry forward. When a student has attempted 18 credit units or more, an average will be calculated at the end of that academic year that includes all grades retroactive to the year in which the partial warning was assigned. An appropriate action will be taken (see above) if the calculated average is below the minimum standard of 60%.

Applying to Open Studies after receiving an RTD Faculty Action

Students who have received a Requirement to Discontinue (RTD) faculty action for the first time from a U of S college can review the Open Studies option.

All first-time RTD students who wish to enter Open Studies will be required to fill out an Request to Enter Open Studies Form. This form will be available in June.  For students who wish to begin classes in September 2012, the deadline for receiving a request to enter Open Studies is August 31, 2012.

Academic Penalty Deadlines

Students should note that courses dropped after the academic penalty deadline are included in the calculation of the weighted average. Students will be assigned a computed percentage final grade based on the course work completed to date of the withdrawal, with 0% (zero) given for all course work outstanding (including the final exam). This grade may be accompanied by a grade comment.
