Communicating as a Leader



Program Overview

Strong leaders communicate with clarity, confidence, and impact. Communicating as a Leader is a two-day program designed to help leaders strengthen their presence, build trust, and adapt their communication to different people and situations. Through discussion, practical tools, hands-on exercises, and opportunities to observe facilitations in action, participants will practice and refine their communication skills. They will return to work with the confidence to communicate their vision, navigate challenging conversations, and inspire others from a place of self-awareness and understanding.

    • Communicate with authenticity, authority, and confidence, using verbal cues and body language, including tone, posture, and facial expressions. 
    • Build trust and influence by remaining composed under pressure and applying listening, empathy, and awareness of others’ body language. 

     

    Navigate Conversations and Group Dynamics 

    • Manage tension, difficult conversations, and group interactions effectively. 
    • Use storytelling, consultative dialogue, and awareness of social and non-verbal cues to influence teams and stakeholders. 

     

    Persuasion and Influence 

    • Build collaborative and productive working relationships through empathy and effective communication. 
    • Apply practical strategies to navigate negotiations and achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.

Shelly Lowe, ICD.D, BComm

Shelly Lowe is a global senior executive with a reputation for influential leadership during times of significant growth and transformation.  She leverages her experience in sales, marketing and operations within the public and not-for-profit sectors, across Canada and Asia Pacific.  Shelly's career includes 32 years in the technology sector, spanning a diverse number of industries and continents, including 12 years in various board room executive roles.

Shelly joined IBM in 1988 and subsequently held various executive positions. She was named Director of Sales for Ontario in 2008, Director of Sales Operations in 2009, and Director of Smarter Analytics/Smarter Solutions in 2012. In 2014, she was appointed as Director of Marketing and Communications. Ms. Lowe was named Vice President, Enterprise and Commercial Sales in 2017 and went on to join the Asia Pacific team, as Vice President of Global Markets for Australia and New Zealand in 2018, a position she held until her retirement. She is presently serving as Board Chair and Vice Chair for organizations she is passionate about. In 2024, she earned her professional ICD.D designation through University of Toronto Rotman School of Management and was appointed in May 2025 as an Executive-in-Residence for the Edwards School of Business. 

Brooke Klassen

Brooke Klassen, BComm, MBA, CMgr 

Brooke Klassen is an Assistant Professor at the Edwards School of Business, University of Saskatchewan. With more than fifteen years of post-secondary experience, her teaching specializations include marketing, business strategy, decision making and entrepreneurship. Prior to her role as a professor, she was a senior administrator in the Edwards School of Business and led a team of student services staff for almost eight years.

Brooke has been a management consultant for almost eight years and has completed more than 70 projects in the areas of strategy, governance, organizational change and communications. Her client list includes private, public, government and Indigenous organizations from a variety of industries. She is also an accomplished author and her work has been published in several well-respected peer reviewed journals.
