Introduction and Background

Dare to Lead is the ultimate playbook for developing brave leaders and courageous cultures.

Daring leadership is a collection of practical and teachable skillsets. Learning and practicing these skills requires brave work, tough conversations, and showing up with your whole heart.

Dare to Lead is designed to untap the hidden potential in your organization’s people with specific steps to help them choose leadership, again and again. The Dare to Lead curriculum helps people and organizations become more courageous, builds trust, and provides practical tools for more effective communication and relationships one-on-one and in groups.

Dr. Brené Brown, a research professor at the University of Houston and four-time New York Times best-selling author, spent years researching leadership and organizational cultures. One aspect of that research included interviewing 150 global C-level leaders on the future of leadership. She asked: “What, if anything, about the way people are leading today needs to change in order for leaders to be successful in a complex, rapidly changing environment?” Brown writes in Dare to Lead, “There was one answer across the interviews: We need braver leaders and more courageous cultures.”

Daring leaders know how to have hard conversations, hold themselves and others accountable, lead with empathy and connection, take smart risks that lead to innovation, build trust, reset quickly after disappointments and setbacks, and give and receive feedback – especially when it’s tough.

Based on her research, Dr. Brown developed an empirically based courage-building program. The four skills to be more courageous are teachable, observable, and measurable. Together, they lead to higher trust, higher impact teams. One of the core principles of this work is the belief in empowering leaders at all levels. Dr. Brown defines leaders as “Anyone who takes responsibility for finding the potential in people and processes, and who has the courage to develop that potential.”

Google’s research into their highest performing teams found that far and away the most important of five key dimensions is psychological safety, defined as, “Team members feel safe to take risks and be vulnerable in front of each other.”

While psychological safety is receiving more and more focus in the workplace, Dare to Lead is the only program we know of that teaches people how to be vulnerable, take risks, and be braver in ways that are successful. The greatest barrier to daring leadership is not fear; the greatest obstacle is armour – how we self-protect and avoid vulnerability when we feel uncertain. Certified Dare to Lead Facilitators teach others the skills necessary to move from armoured leadership to daring leadership.
