USask Agriculture Executive Program

Program Overview

The USask Agriculture Executive Program is a partnership program between the Edwards School of Business and USask College of Agriculture and Bioresources. This program is an immersive 5-day learning experience delivered in Saskatoon, SK designed for agricultural producers and industry professionals seeking to elevate both their leadership and business performance. The program provides practical, applied thought leadership across five core pillars including leadership, finance, operations, production, and strategy, empowering participants to make confident, forward-looking decisions in increasingly complex and evolving business environments.

Set in a collaborative environment away from your daily work, the program offers time and space to focus on working on the business rather than in it. Through a dynamic blend of expert led sessions, applied workshops, keynote addresses, and peer-to-peer dialogue, participants build the capability to make better decisions, improve performance, and adapt to changing industry conditions.

The experience extends beyond the classroom. Throughout the week, participants will learn, dine and exchange ideas with fellow agricultural leaders in a thoughtfully curated setting designed to encourage meaningful connections and new perspectives. The program begins with an opening banquet on Monday and concludes with a celebration banquet on Thursday, both featuring keynote speakers from the agriculture sector.

Effective leadership in agriculture extends beyond managing people—it requires clarity of vision, strong communication, and the ability to lead through uncertainty. This pillar focuses on building self-awareness, strengthening leadership style, and developing high-performing teams. Participants explore organizational structure, succession considerations, and how to foster a culture that supports innovation, accountability, and long-term success.

Financial excellence is the foundation of a resilient and growing agricultural business. This pillar equips participants with the tools to interpret financial statements, manage cash flow, evaluate investment decisions, and navigate lending relationships. Emphasis is placed on improving financial discipline, understanding risk exposure, and making informed decisions that enhance profitability and long-term sustainability.

Operational effectiveness drives productivity and profitability on the farm. This pillar examines systems, processes, and technologies that improve efficiency and scalability across the operation. Participants explore marketing, logistics, and operational planning, while identifying opportunities to streamline workflows, manage costs, and respond to changing market dynamics.

Production decisions directly impact yield, sustainability, and long-term land value. This pillar integrates the latest thinking in crop production, soil health, and emerging technologies. Participants engage with agronomic expertise to better understand how to optimize inputs, manage environmental variability, and align agronomic practices with broader business objectives.

Strategic thinking enables agricultural leaders to move beyond day-to-day decision-making and position their business for the future. This pillar focuses on risk management, industry trends, negotiations, legal and regulatory considerations, and long-term planning. Participants develop a clearer strategic direction, align resources with priorities, and strengthen their ability to anticipate and respond to both challenges and opportunities.

Joint Dean's Message

  • A joint message from Dr. Keith Willoughby and Dr. Angela Bedard-Haughn

Today's producers and agribusinesses face more challenges and opportunities than ever before. Changing markets, new technology, labour shortages, and growing expectations around sustainability are reshaping the industry. Strong production knowledge remains essential, but success also depends on leadership, business skills, and the ability to adapt to change.

As your operation continues to grow, you are being asked to make decisions that are more complex. You are managing larger operations, leading teams, evaluating investments, adopting new technologies, and planning for the future.

That is why the College of Agriculture and Bioresources and the Edwards School of Business at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) have come together to create the USask Agriculture Executive Program.

The five-day in-person program is designed for producers and industry professionals who want to step back from the demands of day-to-day operations and focus on the bigger picture. Through learning in agriculture, leadership, finance, operations, agronomy, and strategy, you will gain awareness of and proficiency in practical tools that you can apply immediately in your operations and organizations.

We believe the future of agriculture depends on strong leaders who can make informed decisions, identify opportunities, and guide their businesses through change. Agriculture is one of Saskatchewan's greatest strengths, and continued success will require people who can combine production expertise with strong business knowledge.

You will learn from industry experts, agricultural specialists, producer leaders, and USask faculty. You will also connect with others across the sector, building valuable relationships and sharing ideas and experiences.

This opportunity is about more than learning new skills. While producers cannot ignore daily operations, this unique executive education experience sharpens your focus on the fundamentals and future of agribusiness.  Through workshops, keynote presentations, group discussions, networking opportunities, and special events, you will gain new ideas and build connections with others in the industry. Combined with Saskatchewan hospitality and a well-organized program, the experience allows you to focus on learning, building relationships, and making the most of your time away from work.

We are proud to bring together the strengths of our two colleges to support Saskatchewan's producers and agriculture professionals. Together, we are helping develop the next generation of agricultural leaders and strengthening the future of Saskatchewan agriculture.

Facilitators

Our program facilitators include USask faculty, industry experts, agricultural specialists, and thought-leading producers. Guest speakers from across the agriculture sector will also share practical knowledge, real-world experience, and insights you can apply to your farm or business.
