The Edwards MBA program: a bridge to opportunity

Edwards MBA student Funmilola shares how the Edwards MBA program has served as a bridge to new opportunities, deeper networks, and a stronger sense of belonging in Canada's business landscape.

My name is Funmilola Mustafa. I was born and raised in Nigeria, where I earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering and a Master of Science in Construction Management. Over the years, I have built a career coordinating and managing projects across diverse industries, including construction, training services, consulting, food services, IT, and security services. These experiences gave me a strong foundation in leadership, strategic planning, and operational execution. However, I had a long-term goal to pursue an international MBA, one that would consolidate the skills I have acquired over the years and add the global perspective needed to advance my career.

Why I Chose the Edwards School of Business MBA Program

Several factors made Edwards the right choice for me. First, the location: being based in Saskatoon with my family meant I could fully commit to my studies without disrupting my family life. Second, the flexibility of the program stood out. Edwards allows students to pace their MBA over two to three years, making it easier to balance academics with work and family responsibilities.

My Favourite Things about the Program

The curriculum’s flexibility meant I could tailor courses to align with my interests and career goals. Another standout feature is the eight-month MBA internship. This hands-on opportunity bridges classroom learning with real-world application, providing exposure to new industries and leadership challenges while expanding professional networks. For someone new to the Canadian workforce, this was particularly valuable.

For me, the Edwards MBA has been more than just an academic program; it’s been a bridge to new opportunities, deeper networks, and a stronger sense of belonging in Canada’s business landscape.

Advice for Future MBA Students

If you are a working professional or a newcomer to Canada considering an MBA, know this: the Edwards program is designed with you in mind. Its flexibility means you can keep working while studying, and the in-person engagement with faculty and peers fosters mentorship and meaningful professional relationships. The internship is a major asset, offering practical experience and industry connections that can accelerate your career integration in Canada.

How to Find Success in the MBA Program

To succeed, I recommend four things:

  • Plan your schedule early. Balancing work, family, and academics takes foresight.
  • Engage with your cohort and faculty. Your network will be as valuable as the knowledge you gain.
  • Take advantage of every opportunity. From workshops to networking events, each one adds to your MBA experience.
  • Keep an open mind. Embrace new ideas, perspectives, and challenges.

Looking Ahead

After completing my MBA, I plan to continue advancing my career in strategic leadership and project management, leveraging my international experience and new Canadian business insights. I also aim to mentor other professionals, particularly newcomers, who are navigating similar transitions.
